And we have the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program doing all the magic in-between dealing with proposals, funding, and listings. (Though listings are far from the only opportunities available if youre interested in a professors research, just go ask about it and see if they have space for someone. Thats how I got my first UROP!) The experience is incredibly valuable. A few years ago, back when I was Course 7 (thats Biology, for all you havent-learned-MITese folks), I UROPd in a really amazing and informative lab working on the genetics of regeneration. Slicing up regenerating organisms with a certain gene turned off to see that they grew heads at every new cut was a real whoaaaaa what? moment :) But though fascinating, I somehow felt like I was missing something biology, in its pure form, didnt seem like it was quite for me. When I started my next set of classes in the fall, I realized that I was heading in the wrong direction. But how can this be? This is an unallowable paradigm shift! Im a biologist, I was always going to be a biologist! Biology was like the best class in high school! This⦠is unimaginable, what else would I be?? I got through the rest of term. Sometime over IAP, I started hanging out in the SIPB office (MITs computing club). And then I did something very strange. I did a thing that I had believed all my life was supposed to be a thing only incredibly boring people. I wrote a program. def Hiya(): print pony Yes, it failed to work, because I didnt put quotes around pony and thus let Python know that it was a string and not a variable. With a quick question to a nearby SIPB member, this was fixed. And pony was printed to my screen. In a reckless, rash, and intuitive leap-of-faith, I filed to change my major. Electrical engineering and computer science. Course 6-2. I registered for, among other things, 6.01 (intro to EECS). I decided to see where this went. Fast forward. Piper is pretty happy with her life, including her major. Piper is looking more into applying her EECS skills (especially the EE side) to biological problems she still, after all, loves biology. Piper is looking for a summer UROP in bioEECS when⦠Space Robots It wasnt bioEECS but it was an awesome summer gig. If I was chosen to be part of the team, I would get to code satellites on the International Space Station! How cool is that?! Just a summer gig. A really cool summer gig. That was all. At the end of the summer, thats still what it was, in my mind. It was a really cool project that I was proud to have worked on, nothing more. (But aero/astro is cool⦠no harm in taking a class as an elective, right? Talking about plane crashes is just fun! But no, I have no aero/astro bug, of course not!) And then came the email in the fall another awesome project with the Space Systems Laboratory. I had, in fact, worked a little on this one over the summer, in my spare work time. It was another satellite project, designed to help protect other satellites by knocking harmful particles out of the Van Allen Radiation Belt HOW COOL WAS THAT?! I was in. (But its just an IAP gig.) ((Thatll Ill be continuing into the spring.)) (((And beyond?))) Oops. (No, this isnt about another change of major. The nice thing about being in a major that is both interesting in itself and widely applicable⦠you can kind of take it anywhere your interests go. This is a very good deal for me ^_^) And thats when I realized that the paradigms I had for my life, they were shifting again. Not quite as dramatically as when I went from biology to EECS, but a nonetheless unpredictable ride that I find myself in the middle of yet again. I have no idea what I will become, I dont know where things will lead me! Ten years from now, what will I be doing? Zapping bacteria with my EE skills? Tinkering with ground code for another satellite? insert your suggestion here? I just have no idea theres to much exciting and wonderful in the world, and I havent got it all planned out right now. Not anymore. But there are certainties in my life, and they are these: I have such excellent ways to figure out the rest of my life and I plan to use them :)

Resear ch shows that students who major in general business and marketing are more likely to be unemployed or underemployed, meaning they hold jobs that donââ¬â¢t require a college degree. Thus, the relationship between black youth identity and hip-hop cannot be separated (Ginwright 31-32). Furthermore, hip-hop is regarded as a social movement. Social movement is generally characterized by sociologists as collective efforts that endeavor social change. However, hip-hop as a social movement follows different pattern because of three important considerations. First is its emergence as a movement which belongs in the field of pop culture, is a discipline not commonly considered as political and not generally recognized as capable of producing social change. Second is the fact that it is founded and patronized by youth and creative people, who are not ordinarily looked upon as interested in implementing social change. Lastly, it allows the participants to see themselves as part of a bigger society. Thus, it creates a sense of collective identity and organization. Hip-hop as a movement represents a different mode of intervention in the social realm (Watkins 65). If hip-hop is not acknowledged then as a movement that can make a change in the world, on the other hand, it is essential to look at it from another side. Today, hip-hop has revolutionized new genres of music, such as reggaeton, and has influenced the political system. One good example is when Kilopatrick, from a hip-hop generation, defeated the Detroitââ¬â¢s current mayor Gil Hill. It is because the youths from the hip-hop generation have already grown and have already obtained the right and freedom to vote. Their voices have already begun to be heard in the political spectrum. Astronomers Peer Deep into Blobs in Space Out in the depths of space, theres a blob that astronomers have been anxious to explain. It wasnt immediately obvious to them why it shined as brightly as it did. The blob (and it really is a blob) is called SSA22-Lyman-alpha-blob and it lies some 11.5 billion years away from us. That means that it looks to us now as it did some 11.5 billion years ago. SSA22-LAB appears to have two giant galaxies at its heart that are bursting with star formation activity. The whole region where this object and its galaxies lies is swarming with smaller galaxies. Clearly, something is going on there, but what?à VLT and ALMA to the Rescue This rare Lyman-alpha Blob is not exactly visible to the naked eye. Thats largely due to distance, but also because the light its emitting is visible to us here on Earth in infrared wavelengths and also in radio frequencies. The name Lyman-alpha-blob tells astronomers that the object originally radiated its light in ultraviolet wavelengths. However, due to the expansion of space, the light is shifted so that its visible in infrared. Its one of the largest of these LABs to be observed. So, astronomers used the European Southern Observatorysà Very Large Telescope Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer to dissect the incoming light for study. They then combined that information with data from the Atacama Large-Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. Together, these two observatories allowed astronomers to peek into the heart of the action at the distant blob in space. Deep imaging with the Hubble Space Telescopes Imaging Spectrograph and the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii also helped them refine the view of the blob. The result is an amazingly beautiful view of a blob that existed in the distant past but is still telling us its story today. Whats Happening at SSA22-LAB? It turns out that this blob is one very interesting result of galaxy interactions,à which create ever-larger galaxies. Furthermore, the two embedded galaxies are surrounded by clouds of hydrogen gas. At the same time, they are both cranking out hot young stars at a furious rate. Baby stars emit a lot of ultraviolet light, and that lights up the surrounding clouds. Its like looking at a streetlight on a foggy night - the light from the lamp scatters off the water drops in the fog and it makes a kind of foggy glow around the light. In this case, the light from the stars is scattering off the hydrogen molecules and creating the lyman-alpha blob. Why Is This Discovery so Important? Distant galaxies are extremely interesting to study. In fact, the more distant they are, the more fascinating they get. Thats because very distant galaxies are also very early galaxies. We see them as they were as they were infants. The birth and evolution of galaxies is one of the hottest areas of study in astronomy these days. Astronomers know that it proceeds as smaller galaxies merge together with larger ones. They see galaxy mergers at nearly every part of cosmic history, but the beginnings of those mergers started back 11 to 13 billion years ago. However, the details of all mergers are still being studied, and the results (such as this lovely blob) are often quite a surprise to them. If scientists can get a handle on how galaxies form through collisions and cannibalization, they can understand how these processes worked in the early universe. Whats more, from observing other, newer galaxies that have been through the same process that this LAB galaxy is experiencing, they know that it will result in a giant elliptical galaxy. Along the way, it will collide with more galaxies. Each time, the galaxy interaction will force the creation of countless hot, young massive stars.à These starburst galaxies show prodigious rates of star formation. And, as they evolve and die, they will also change their galaxy - seeding it with more elements and the seeds of future stars and planets. In a sense, looking at SSA22-Lyman-alpha-blog is like looking at the process our own galaxy might have experienced early in its formation. However, the Milky Way didnt end up as an elliptical galaxy in the heart of a cluster as this one will do. Instead, it became a spiral galaxy, home to trillions of stars and many planets. ââ¬â¹In the future, it will merge again, this time with the Andromeda Galaxy. And, when it does that, the combined galaxies will indeed form an elliptical. So, the study of SSA22-LAB is a very important step in understanding the origin and evolution of all galaxies.

Then if he would like to take his girlfriend out for dinner at East Side Marios, a dinner package for one is 14.99. This means that for two people it would be 29.98, not including taxes. Eating a well balanced meals on a regular basis, drinking less caffeine, getting enough sleep, and Exercising regularly . If they had to think about it, he or she leaves for school at 8:15 am and gets home for 3:30. That is 7 hours already out of the house. Doing work that would make any ones head hurt ! This is sort of a work day for him already. Then there is homework, after school activities. He might have a 10-11 hour day. Working on top of that might be too much for them. Then what are his plans for spending the money? Will he spend it aimlessly on things like video games and junk food? There are some people that say. They are young, let them live it up now. But then there are people that say, They need to save now and work hard so they can live later. Who do They listen to? If they work hard now, what happens later when they have worked all their lives? They could get sick later, then they have not had any fun, or they have not worked at all, so should parnents let them have fun now and have nothing later? There is also the safety aspect. Wow what a scary thought ! So how does anyone decide? I guess first they will have to take into consideration that he wants to work . Then they will look at his stress level. Is he already under a lot of stress? And are his grades good ? Being under stress can lead to other problems like self esteem issues. Then they will have to determine the need. Some families dont have the option and everyone has to work. Or maybe he does not need to work. Just knowing fact that he would gain the experience and the knowledge that it is hard work to make the money that he would earn. Then they would have to make sure that he does not just pick any job. They do not want to let him settle for a job that he will just hate later. Or that he has to work very hard with little pay. Pay is a big part of the job, but so is being respected by the people that he will have to work with and his management. The environment in which he will be working will make a difference in his attitude about the job as well. The job would have to be flexible- making sure his education comes first is very important. Maybe he could think about a summer job. He would still have the money but not all the stress. Then make sure he is safe by contacting the Ontario Ministry of Labour. Here is there web sight. Here are some examples of the types of workplaces with no minimum age requirements that the youth are allowed to volunteer: libraries, museums, art galleries, schools, day cares, camps, health care for example: hospitals, nursing homes, retirement homes,hospices (excluding kitchens). They could also work in recreation e.g., sports teams golf, tennis, ski instruction, community events like car washes, food and clothing drives. This has been his first summer, and he is enjoying the freedom he gets by working. It has been a fun, worthwhile, and safe job experience so far.
